The Department of Human Sciences at North Carolina Central University intends to continue on its trailblazing past to
empower individuals, strengthen families and enable communities. This is evident in the departmental motto which states,
“Together we can achieve the extraordinary!”
Prepared by Debra J. Parker, Ph.D.
From the beginning, when it was known as the National Religious Training
School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race, its purpose has been the character development
of young men and women emphasizing sound academic training as a requisite for real
service to the nation. ( http://www.nccu.edu/formsdocs/proxy.cfm?file_id=956)

STRIVING TO MAKE A BETTER TODAY AND TOMORROW FOR OUR YOUTH

A QUOTE ABOUT CHILDREN: "Guidance and love towards children makes learning and growing so much easier."

A STORY ABOUT A CHILD: The story that I want to elaborate on is about a young african american 4 year old little girl.  She touches my heart tremendously.  She has sickle cell anemia as well as asthma.  She also has a speech impetimete, but she is the sweetest little girl that you would ever want to meet. She has 2 younger siblings that she helps take care of as much as possible.  The siblings are one years old and 5 months old.  She touches my heart because even though she has a few medical problems she still strives to be the best that she can be. Her mother trys but being that she is a very young mopther with 3 children it gets hard for her. She does not sit long enough to help her daughter with educational things. Being that my daughter is advanced in all areas I get her to help the lil girl out as much as possible and I do what I can as well.I gave her some personal belongings as well because she doesnt have much around her house. She likes to show affection and I show it right back to her because she does not get it often at home. I kind of clinged to her as well as she did to me because she is a fighter when it comes to her medical conhditions and she is a learning when it comes to learning. I feel like no child should have to lack because of there parents mishaps if they can help it.
SOMETHING ESLE THAT FUELS MY PASSION ABOUT YOUNG CHILDREN: iI feel like children did not ask to be here so they should get all the attention in the world that they deserve. They are our most precious assets. This world is ruff and they are our diamonds in the ruff. I just love the fact that they are going to learn regardless of getting help from teachers or parents so why not teach the right things the right way as parents and as educators. That strive is another one of my passions.

Intellient, Smart, Outgoing, Thriving, Black Woman

Hello My Name is Shereva Brown.  I just recently graduated from North Caolina Central Unversity with a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Science majoring in Child Development and Family Relations. I am pursuing my career in my field working at a childcare center where I have a teaching position and I start July 11, 2011.  Some professional experiences that have have encountered are doing my practicum in undergrad, where I had to complete a 100 hours doing something that pertained to my major. I chose to do my hours at a home daycare center just to see if teaching was something that I wanted to do.

Some interests that I have are to reach out to young children in need of love and nurturing because I always was taught that If I could touch one child'slife my teaching will not be in vain.  The qualities that I have are amazing. I have a passionate love for children as well as a love for my job that I will be starting soon. The challenges that I face are not being able to be in a face to face classroom if I need to, but I am strong minded as well as a go getter so im pretty sure that I will be ok throughout this couseof my life.
Some strengths that I bring to the table being that this is an online community is, I can help those that are not familiar with online classes because upon completion of my undergraduate degree I too at least five online classes and it is very so much the same as this online community. The slight difference is that my undergraduate school is in the town where I reside. Whereas I could go up there and speak with my proffessor of the class face to face. Since the university is out of state for my master's program I will have to understand every thing differently now and read closely. That would be the challenge that I have with this course thus far.
